On June 21, 2026 Carl Lee Avera went to be with his Shepherd and Savior Jesus Christ at the age of 94. Carl lived a life of respecting those who came before us, shepherding those in the present, for the sake of those in the future.
Carl was born in Mart, Texas on May 5, 1932 to Hardy Richard Avera and Mary Inez Watford Avera. Later, he moved to Palestine, Texas and graduated from Palestine High School and later obtained an education degree from Sam Houston State University. During the Korean War, Carl served in the U.S. Army earning the distinction of corporal as a military police officer and later as assistant to the army chaplain. After his service in the army, Carl served the Lord as a minister of education and as a youth pastor in the Methodist Church. After this, he taught English and history in secondary schools in Palestine, Mart, and Houston. Later, Carl became the high school and city librarian in Mart.
Carl’s love for history was infectious. He treasured the history of Palestine and Anderson County. He served in many ways to preserve the local history from being swept away by the winds of time. Carl published multiple books and articles to document the histories of both Palestine, Mart, and the South.
Perhaps most of all, Carl was well known for opening his heart to all he met and bringing them moments of joy through conversation.
Carl is survived by four nieces: Gayle Evans Steinman, Cheryl Watts Stephenson, Pam Hagler, and Beverly Watts as well as two nephews: Gary William Evans and Bill Avera. Also, Carl is survived by his beloved “adopted” son John Burger and dearly loved grandson, Trey Burger and his mother Kristi. Too many to name are the numerous great nieces, and nephews that have loving affection for him.
A brief graveside memorial service will be held Tuesday, June 23rd, 11 am at the Mart Cemetery with assistance from Littlepage Funeral Home.
