George Thomas Gibbs, age 77, of Mart, Texas, passed away on February 9, 2026. Born on July 22, 1948, George was the son of George Gibbs and Anna Dale Gibbs, who preceded him in death along with two older sisters Martha Gibbs and Sarah “Dumpy” Newell. He lived a life marked by service to his country, dedication to education, and unwavering love for his family and community.
George graduated from Axtell High School in 1967. He proudly served in the United States Navy from 1969 to 1975, completing two tours of duty in Vietnam aboard the ammunition ship USS Mount Katmai.
After his military service, George continued his education, earning a Bachelor’s degree in 1978, followed by a Master’s degree from Tarleton State University.
George devoted nearly 30 years to education as an Agriculture Teacher at Mart High School, where he taught from 1978 until his retirement in 2007. In addition to teaching, George proudly served as the school’s FFA Advisor, mentoring countless students and taking many young people to competitions across the state and throughout the country. His influence extended far beyond the classroom, shaping generations through leadership, encouragement, and opportunity.
George was deeply involved in his community. He volunteered for 12 years with the Mart Volunteer Fire Department and played an instrumental role in supporting local youth programs. He founded the first 4H group in Mart, creating new opportunities for young people to learn, grow, and thrive.
George was also a dedicated supporter of agricultural traditions, including the Heart of Texas Livestock Show and the McLennan County Junior Livestock Association. He helped bring back Mr. Bill’s Barnyard, a beloved part of the livestock show experience for families and children.
Following his retirement from teaching, George continued serving his community by working at the Mart Library, beginning in 2014, where he remained a familiar and welcoming presence for several years.
A faithful man, George was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Mart, where he found strength in his faith and fellowship.
On August 8, 1969, George married the love of his life, Vickie Alen (Parsons) Gibbs, and together they built a strong family rooted in faith and commitment.
George is survived by his beloved wife, Vickie Gibbs; his children, Kevin Gibbs and Kimberly Green; and his six grandchildren: Addelynn Gibbs, Collin Gibbs, Dylan Green, Zachary Green, Raider Green, and Brooklyn Green. He is also survived by his brothers, O’Neal Gibbs and Dan Gibbs, his sister Ann Gibbs, and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
