George Stone

George Handley Stone, age 89, of Mart passed away on May 30, 2026. George was born on February 9, 1937 near Hubbard, TX. He was the youngest of three children born to Robert Cecil (R.C.) Stone and Grace Handley Stone.

George grew up around Hubbard and, when he was in the first grade, the family moved to the community of Frosa. George grew up surrounded by a very large group of first cousins, and this group remained close throughout their lives, holding regular reunions even as cousins aged into their later years.

George graduated from Mart High School in 1955, and married his high school sweetheart Symonetta (Simmie) Berry in 1957. They moved to Huntsville, where George received his degree from Sam Houston State University in 1959. That same year, he joined the Army Reserves. In 1960 he went to work for General Tire, where he worked for 10 years in the Accounting department. In 1970, he and Simmie opened Stone Insurance Agency in Mart. In the late 1970’s, George and others opened a men' s clothing shop in Mart called The Peddler. George and Simmie continued in the insurance business until the mid-90’s. He owned an accounting and tax business until the time of his death.

George loved to play golf, and he could be found on the Battle Lake Golf Course several days of the week. He had many loyal golfing friends, and his coffee shop friends. He was a lifelong supporter of the Mart Panthers, and a long-time member of the Panther Club. George served his beloved community on the Mart ISD School Board for 29 years, retiring just last year.

In 1989, Simmie began to show signs of Alzheimer’s Disease. George was her faithful and loving caretaker until her death in 2001.

In 2003, he was blessed to meet and marry Joann McClinton. George and Joann enjoyed 23 loving and wonderful years together and Joann was his faithful caregiver and by his side until the very end. Rhonda and Bobby Amos and Thomas Smith were also caregivers until the end     George is survived by his wife Joann, his three children Lana (Adrienne}, Kendall (Susan) and David (Natalee). He is also survived by 2 grandchildren Grace (Carter) and Sam (Kristin), along with 5 great-grandchildren Dayton, Claire, Nora, Molly and Andrew. He is survived by his step-daughter Rhonda (Bobby), their sons Colby and Thomas Smith, along with stepson Bobby Teel (Delia) and step-daughter Jennie (Mike) and many other grandchildren & great grandchildren. Surviving him are also his nieces Debbie, Molly and Jamie and his nephew Mike. Thanks to Interim Hospice and Nurse April for the visits and care.

George was a faithful and loving son, spouse, father, and friend. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. According to George’s wishes, his body will be cremated. There will be a Memorial Remembrance on Saturday, June 20th from 10 a.m. - 12noon at Littlepage Funeral Home at 711 Texas Avenue in Mart.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the George Stone Scholarship Fund at Mart High School. George was committed to his community and its schools, and he would be pleased to know his legacy is honored in this way.
