Sherrill Jan Sheffield Pogue

Sherrill Jan Sheffield Pogue, 93 of Mart passed away on September 17, 2026 surrounded by family after a brief, but courageous battle with cancer.

A visitation will be held Tuesday 9/22/26 at Littlepage Funeral Home from 5pm to 7pm. Service to be held Wednesday 9/23/26 at First Baptist Church Mart at 10:00am.

Sherrill was born August 10, 1933 in Palestine, Texas to Elmore Cooke Sheffield and Alpha Neoma Carr Sheffield. Sherrill graduated from Palestine High School in 1951 and continued her studies at Baylor University earning a Bachelor degree in Education in 1955. 

While attending Baylor, Sherrill met Paul Ray Pogue on a blind date and were married in August of 1955. Sherrill and Paul were married for 69 years until his death in 2025. Paul joined the Marines in 1957 and together they moved to Quantico, VA where they welcomed their first child David Sheffield Pogue in 1958. After completing his Military service in the Marine Corp, Paul and Sherrill settled in Houston, Tx and welcomed their second child, Sherri Lee Pogue in 1961.

Sherrill was very active in the church and community. Sherrill taught 1st grade Sunday School, young married couples at Tallowood Baptist Church as well as a Cub-Scout and Blue-Bird Leader. Sherrill was a member of the Garden Club, Daughters of the American Revolution and the Eastern Star. For many years, Sherrill decorated cakes for birthdays, baby showers and weddings. Cooking, baking and entertaining were her passion. Sherrill’s rolls and cinnamon rolls became everyone’s favorite and were the highlight of every occasion.

Paul and Sherrill moved to Mart, Tx in 1989 where she continued her love of church and community. Sherrill worked at the Mart Museum, Mart Library and Mart Community Center. Sherrill also volunteered at the Mayborn Museum in Waco, Tx. Sherrill loved the outdoors working in her garden of flowers. Sherrill could be found enjoying the sights and sounds of the cardinals, bluebirds, and hummingbirds that were attracted to her many birdfeeders. Sherrill loved spending time with her family and friends. She was loved by all who knew her.

Sherrill is survived by her children, son David Pogue and wife Tami Pogue of Katy; daughter Sherri Byrd and husband David Byrd of Mart; grandchildren, Kirsten Woolf and husband Sean Woolf of Belton; Kendall Pogue of Beaverton, Oregon; and great-grandchildren Violet Bee Pogue, Sydney Emma Woolf, and Parker Paul Woolf.
